2014 Summer Series
Resilient Cities: Sustainability and Resiliency = Mitigate + Adaptation

Sustainability and resiliency work cooperatively to combat climate change, but differ in their individual meanings.  Sustainable development meets the needs of the present generation while planning for a prosperous future.  Resilient systems are prepared to withstand and flexibly respond to external shocks.  Mitigation implies the design of energy, water, and transportation systems that minimize the impacts of a changing climate.  Adaption will require stronger, more robust infrastructure to neutralize hotter, drier climates and sea level rise. San Diego must focus its attention toward developing internal sustainability and resiliency in preparation of an unpredictable future.
