Event Description:
This GeoDesign event will focuses on the conversion of ArcMap projects into open source ArcGIS Online maps. We will discuss the benefits of ArcGIS Online maps, their limitations, lessons learned in the conversion process, and how ArcGIS Online compares to other open source geo-spatial data tools such as QGIS, Google Earth (Pro), and OpenStreetMap. Explore various ways that you can share your maps with the public as links embedded in a website.
We will touch on the benefits and limitations of ArcGIS Online, including:
- Interactivity for the public user who doesn't have an account to access ARC Maps
- File size limitations and how to work around them
- The user interface: how intuitive is it?
- The differences between ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Explorer Online
- Extra features with a paid subscription to ArcGIS Online for Organizations

Quentin Gregg is a recent graduate from UCLA's Geography/Environmental Studies program, where he also completed a minor in GIS and Technologies. He is now applying his education here in San Diego as a GIS Research Associate at GENI's World Resources SimCenter and at the San Diego Archaeological Center. His current project has him converting national renewable energy maps of the US, China and India to ARC GIS Online. In addition he is developing time zone modeling maps of global energy demand.
