In December leaders from around the world will meet in Copenhagen to try to agree on cutting back greenhouse gas emissions for decades to come. The most effective step to implement that goal would be a massive shift away from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy sources. If leaders can have confidence that such a transformation is possible, they might commit to an historic agreement. We think they can.

China Electricity Consumption To Almost Double By 2020: China Electricity Council

BEIJING -- Xinhua

The China Electricity Council (CEC) projected Tuesday the country's electricity consumption will almost double from the 2010 level to 8.2 trillion kWh by 2020.

In a report on the electricity industry's development in the 12th Five-year Program period (2011-2015), the CEC said electricity consumption this year will reach 4.17 trillion kWh and increase to 6.27 trillion kWh by 2015.

Food crisis caused by biofuels?

There are conflicting opinions over a World Bank report which suggests biofuels have forced global food prices up by 75%.

The original study in 2008 depicted a direct correlation between the spike in prices of food products and the increased global use of biofuels.

The report argued that: “Without the increase in biofuels, global wheat and maize stocks would not have declined appreciably and price increases due to other factors would have been moderate.”

Renewable energy topped fossil fuels and nuclear for the second year in a row in the USA and Europe in 2009, according to the Global Wind Energy Association (GWEC).Renewable energy accounted for 60% of new capacity installed in Europe and over 50% of new capacity in the USA in 2009. Renewable energy represented 25% of global electricity capacity in 2009 with 1230 GW of the total 4.8 TW. Renewable energy also accounted for 18% of global power production.
